- The sealant won’t cure properly. Most of today’s asphalt shingles are manufactured with a sealant that helps prevent water infiltration and wind damage at the shingle edges. This sealant is cured or activated by heat, which is normally gained from exposure to direct sunlight.
- Asphalt shingles are temperature-sensitive. Asphalt shingles can become brittle when exposed to temperatures lower than 40 degrees. This can result in a greater number of wasted material as the shingles lose their flexibility.
- It’s more dangerous for roofers. Winter conditions can slow down the installation process, and may even increase the risks of injury for roofers.

- Roofing manufacturers provide a type of roof cement that’s designed to be applied manually, and is made with winter conditions in mind. After application, the roof cement would allow the pre-applied sealant cure under cold weather. It may increase the installation time, but it helps ensure a proper seal.
- The shingles are thawed by spreading them on the work areas on the roof, letting the shingles absorb heat from the sun. As soon as the asphalt shingles reach a minimum of 40 degrees, they’re good for installation.
- A roofer’s safety training and installation skills are often put to the test during the winter season. In addition to wearing the proper safety gear, roofers take greater care in using installation equipment such as nail guns.
