5 Reasons Why Some Roof Claims Are Denied

There are many reasons why roof-related claims are denied by insurance companies, but they all have something to do with the specifics of the insurance policy. Here are five possible reasons your roof claim can be denied.

1. There Is Previous Damage.

Keep in mind that no insurance policy will cover damage that has occurred under a previous policy. Instead, it will only cover damage caused by the most recent event. So, if the insurer determines that old damage along with new damage caused your roofing system to break down, it is likely that your claim will be denied.

2. There Is a Manufacturer’s Defect.

A defective product will deteriorate before its expected lifespan. If it is determined that a manufacturer’s defect caused the roof failure, your insurer will not cover the replacement cost.

3. The Claim Is Filed Too Late.

Most insurance policies state that a claim must be filed within a reasonable period. If you fail to do so, they will have no choice but to deny the claim. Fortunately, a denial based on this circumstance can be easily avoided. Just make sure to immediately schedule an inspection after the suspected damage.

4. The Roof Is Too Old.

Your insurance claims can be denied if your roof is too old. In most cases, roofs that are older than 15 to 20 years are not covered by insurance companies. However, if the damage was caused by wind or hail, it might still be valid even if your roof is past its prime.

5. Someone Else Is Liable.

Any damage brought upon by intentional or unintentional acts of visitors or service providers will not be covered by your homeowners insurance. So, before you get work done on your roof, make sure your contractor is bonded and insured.
