3 Reasons Why Proper Attic Ventilation Is a Must

Your roof is not alone in protecting your home. Together with proper attic ventilation, it serves as protection for your home as well as helps keep the living areas comfortable. Without adequate ventilation, you will surely notice that there’s something wrong with your home. Here are three reasons why proper attic ventilation is a must.

1. It keeps living spaces comfortable. During the warmer months, the sun increases your roof’s surface temperature. The residual heat then radiates into your attic. With an inadequately ventilated attic, some of the heat buildup inside the space moves down to your living areas. This can lead to an increase in your energy bills since your HVAC system will have to work harder to keep the indoors comfortable. But when you have enough roof vents installed, you keep the air circulating in your attic. With this, you’ll no longer have to deal with uncomfortable living conditions.

2. It minimizes ice dam formations. During the winter months, the heated air from your living spaces rises up to your attic. With inadequate attic ventilation, this heated attic melts the bottom layer of snow, which moves down your roof. Once it reaches the cold outer edge of your roof, the melted snow refreezes and forms an ice dam. A ventilated attic prevents this from happening by keeping your attic as cool and dry as the outdoor temperature.

3. It prevents mold and mildew growth. Your living areas will generate humidity that can rise to your attic. If your attic is improperly ventilated, the water vapor can turn into liquid and form moisture. Unaddressed moisture issues in your attic can cause mold and mildew growth. We all know how they can impact the health and well-being of your family, which is why it pays to have proper attic ventilation.
