Why Do Asphalt Shingles Blister?

Most of our roof shingles will weaken due to extreme weather conditions, such as harsh summer heat and heavy hailstorms. This means homeowners will eventually call a roofing company for a repair or replacement, especially if you notice blisters on your roof. We’ll enlighten you more about how this occurs and how you can easily deal with this problem.

Common Causes of Roof Blisters

Moisture, insufficient ventilation and faulty installation are some of the common causes of roof blisters. Improper installation work can leave small empty spaces in your roof that may contain pockets of moisture. When the sun heats up the shingles, pressure in these pockets may rise and elevate the surface which results in blisters.

Any roofer would note that for some instances, blisters can form on an extremely hot roof surface, making poorly ventilated roofs prone to this particular problem. Moreover, blisters are raised areas where there is a lack of adhesion on the roof. They usually contain trapped moisture or air and look like bubbles on your roof. When these are neglected, they will enlarge, letting more moisture penetrate the membrane. This dramatically leads to costly repairs and replacement.

Dealing With and Preventing Blisters

The roof membrane can handle small movements and would be able to withstand a few blisters. However, if there are more than a few on your roof, immediately call contractors to check whether a repair or replacement is necessary. The best way to avoid this problem is to make sure your roof is installed correctly. Only hire a reputable and trained professional for your project. Make certain to have your roof regularly maintained as well.
