Rafters vs. Trusses: A Quick Guide

You probably already know just how important the roof structure is. For starters, it supports the roof over your head while ensuring the system can handle any pressure – or load -p laced upon it. The structural framework is also responsible for distributing weight safely and evenly throughout the system and along your home’s main foundation. But did you know it comes in two types? Rafters and trusses are sometimes used interchangeably, but they actually have some distinct differences.

What You Should Know About Rafters

If you live in an older home, then you probably have rafters supporting your roofing system. The rafters, which are also termed “stick framing”, use lengthy planks that slope down from a central beam at the peak of the roof and intersect with your exterior walls. Having rafters as a roof support structure offers many advantages, including:

  • Larger attic space: Because the rafters leave the attic void more open, they make it easy for you to convert it into an extra bedroom or storage space.
  • More ceiling choices: If you’ve always wanted vaulted or cathedral ceilings, rafters can help you make them possible.
  • Better attic insulation: The open space created by the rafters makes installing insulation, and other efficiency-related upgrades, simpler and faster.

What You Should Know About Trusses

They are a prefabricated structure that uses a triangular webbing of structural members to provide support for the roofing system. If you’re having a new home built, or adding a structure to it, then you can expect that trusses will be used for the roof’s framework. Trusses also allow for:

  • Better quality control: They are built in a controlled factory environment so their quality is more consistent compared to rafters.
  • Greater convenience: Trusses are only transported to the worksite on the day they’re about to be installed, which takes care of issues related to weather exposure and storage.
  • Faster work: Roof trusses are faster and more efficient to install, and are also small and light enough that two or three people can manually lift them.
