Sagging Roof and Its Causes

A well-built sloped roof has its framing rigidly designed to support a specific maximum amount of weight. However, it can sag over time due several factors, such as excessive weight, age and internal damage. Whatever the causes may be, if your roof is visibly sagging, you’ll need to have it addressed by a trusted roofer company  to reduce the possibility of a collapse. Below are some of its common causes:

Excess Weight From the Materials

It’s possible that your roof is sagging because it can’t handle the weight of your materials. This can happen if there are too many layers of shingles installed on your roof or if it has design flaws that make the roof unable to support its own weight. This can include insufficient rafter ties, undersized rafters and even insufficient sheathing.

Your Roof Is Too Old

With proper care and maintenance from a trusted roofer, your roof will easily last more than a decade. But if your roof is near the end of its expected lifespan, it may start to sag, which means the materials have deteriorated significantly in the last few years. If this is the case, you’ll need to get it replaced as soon as possible before it causes further damage to your home.

Your Roof Has Been Water-Damaged

Over time, rain and snow can make your roof sag if it isn’t designed and built for the local weather. This can also happen due to poor maintenance, especially if you don’t always clean or unclog your gutter system. The shingles installed on your roof need to be in good condition for effective water run-off. As for your flashing, it should be properly installed on the valleys and junctions of your roof to direct water away. Your gutters should also be cleaned regularly so that the water run-off is safely directed away and not pooling and seeping through your roof.
