But what if what you really need – or what you actually mean – is an inspection? Is there a difference? Shouldn’t a contractor inspect your roof before giving you that free estimate?

This is when you already know that your roof is damaged or is due for a replacement. You want to find out how much you have to pay to fix or replace what’s broken. If you already know that your roof is damaged, don’t bother with an inspection. Ask contractors for that free estimate.
An estimate or quote details the cost of the fix or replacement in terms of material and labor costs. It should also show you the timeframe.
