4 Reasons Why Your Asphalt Shingles Curl

As time goes by, your roofing system could face a wide variety of issues as it continues to protect your home. According to roofing contractors, these problems could range from missing shingles to leaks to gutter problems. While these are problems that you need to protect your roof from, there is another issue you shouldn’t forget about: shingle curling.

Here are the four reasons why your asphalt shingles are curling.

1. Your Shingles Aren’t Lined Properly

Each asphalt roofing shingle usually comes with an adhesive strip known as the tar line, a component that allows the material to adhere properly to the roof. With that in mind, it’s important that this tar line is lined up properly. Otherwise, it won’t adhere properly to the roof deck, and it can cause your shingles to curl eventually.

2. Poor Attic Ventilation

Proper ventilation is important for every roof as it prevents hot, moisture-filled air from remaining in your attic. If your attic is well-ventilated, your attic will have proper air circulation, allowing the excess moisture to be pushed out of the attic. However, if your attic has poor ventilation, you can expect your shingles to begin curling as the hot air will bake it from the inside as a result.

3. Old Age

On the other hand, when you’re trying to determine what could be causing your shingles to curl, ask yourself how old the roof is. If the roof is more than 20 years old, shingle curling is a sign that you should have it replaced as it is approaching the end of its lifespan. By having your roofing system replaced as soon as you can, you’ll be able to save a lot of time and money in the long run.

4. Multiple Layers

When they’re having a roofing project done, some homeowners tend to opt to have their new roof placed on top of the old one instead of having the old roof removed and replaced. This is because this is a less costly alternative over a complete roof replacement. Unfortunately, if you opt for this option, it can cause your shingles to curl prematurely as the second layer of shingles won’t be very secure, leading to them being blown and curled by strong winds.
