The Underlayment and the Role It Plays on Your Roofing System

Your roof is an intricate system with numerous components and layers. One of the most vital layers is the underlayment, which protects the roof deck from damage and serves as your home’s primary defense against leaks.

The Importance of the Underlayment

The primary role of the underlayment is to act as a layer between the roof covering and the decking. Once installed, it serves as the moisture barrier that stops water from getting through the asphalt shingles, metal panels or tiles, and causing damage to the vulnerable roof decking or sheathing.

Roof installations are often finished in a day or two; however, certain situations like inclement weather may cause the project to take a few days to complete. In this case, the underlayment can act as temporary protection while the roof covering is yet to be completely installed. It does a fine job at this because of how the material is designed. For a residential and commercial roofer like us, using only the best possible products is imperative to ensure the utmost protection against the elements.

The Various Types of Roof Underlayment

Today, many roofers utilize the rubberized asphalt underlayment during installations. Known for its tremendous waterproofing qualities, it is made of a combination of high-density asphalt and rubber polymers. This allows the material to offer maximum protection against water intrusion.

Before synthetic products were introduced, however, roofers relied on asphalt-saturated felt as the material for covering the roof decking. It is still effective in resisting water intrusion, but it is not as waterproof as today’s underlayment materials.
